One-time $90 Medicare rebate is coming for eligible beneficiaries
CMS says eligible Original Medicare beneficiaries will receive $90 in October. Medicare Advantage members are excluded.
About 20.8 million eligible Original Medicare beneficiaries are scheduled to receive a one-time $90 payment in October, according to guidance issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The rebate has eligibility limits and does not apply to everyone enrolled in Medicare.
CMS says most direct deposits are expected on or around October 8. People receiving paper checks should expect them later in the month. The agency’s timetable describes expected delivery, rather than guaranteeing that every recipient will be paid on the same day.
Who qualifies
The program covers qualifying U.S. residents enrolled in Original Medicare Part B. Medicare Advantage enrollees are excluded, according to the CMS frequently asked questions.
The White House’s October 2 announcement also excludes beneficiaries whose premiums are paid through Medicaid assistance and those who pay income-related premium surcharges, commonly called IRMAA. Its explanation presents the payment as relief directed toward beneficiaries who bear the applicable premium cost themselves.
The administration says Congress provided $2 billion through the Medicare Improvement Fund for the payments. The announced amount is a single rebate; it should not be treated as a new $90 monthly benefit.
How much relief it provides
The standard Medicare Part B premium for 2026 is $202.90 a month, up $17.90 from $185 in 2025, according to CMS’s annual premium notice. Part B helps cover physician services, outpatient care and certain other medical services.
At the standard rate, the $90 rebate equals about 44% of one monthly premium. It is also approximately the amount of five months of the $17.90 year-over-year increase. Those comparisons are calculations using CMS’s published figures; they do not change a beneficiary’s ongoing premium obligation.
The practical distinction is between a temporary payment and the recurring cost of coverage. Beneficiaries budgeting for subsequent months should continue to use their applicable premium amount.
Where to check a payment
CMS directs eligibility questions to 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). For payment-status questions, its guidance directs beneficiaries to Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 beginning October 15. That later date matters for anyone checking on a deposit or mailed check that has not yet arrived.
